This week's lecture given in Second Life by the guest speaker Ofelia Pevensey was definitely an interesting experience. It was interesting in that we did not learn about Second Life, but rather about a thriving Second Life community known as GimpGirls. GimpGirls was formed before Second Life, therefore they used other virtual spaces before to meet and discuss. I would not think that a group would have a successful time in SL as it is difficult to begin because it is not extremely user friendly. It is awesome that they have recognized this and created or adopted another application in which community members can remotely access and chat through Second Life without actually entering it. Maybe it is fact that GimpGirls was formed online first, the members are all at least somewhat computer literate and have the ability to use a program such as SL. Nevertheless it appears that GimpGirls have a very supportive community going that is working well to help women with disabilities. As mentioned with the last SL lecture, I really think that if voice was implemented it would have been more easily digested. It is difficult to stare at the chatbox for a while and read the continuous dialogue.
